Historic Cookery: Tudor Cooking (outdoor workshop)

Here is the course so many of our visitors have been asking for: Tudor cooking on a wood fire with costumed tutors:

  • light fires out of doors, using flax tow and firesteels
  • tend the fires and use them for cooking 16th century delights
  • select herbs and edible flowers from the garden
  • rediscover the tastes of long-forgotten spices, popular in Tudor times
  • make pottages, chewits, oatcakes, beverages and “salat” using replica historic tools and utensils
  • eat the dishes we prepare for dinner along with butter we churn on the day

Date: Sunday 30th July 2017

Time: 11am- 4pm (registration from 10.30am)

Location: The Garden, Sulgrave Manor

Includes: Tuition by Linda and Rosemary (Sulgrave Manor Education Team) in Tudor costume, tinder, kindling and firewood, ingredients, refreshments and lunch

Historic Cookery Workshop: Tudor Christmas Sweetmeats

Ever wondered what treats the Tudors enjoyed at Christmas time?

Create and take home your own Tudor sweet treats suitable for Christmas banqueting:

  • rediscover the tastes of long-forgotten spices, popular in Tudor times
  • make sweetmeats such as moulded and baked marchepane, sugar plate subtleties, marzipan fruits, Tudor gingerbread…
  • make your own bottle of spiced Hippocras made of wine or grape juice
  • take home your treats for an unusual present, or for yourself!

N.B. Not suitable for those with nut allergy.
