Are you interested in people or land in South Northamptonshire, South Warwickshire or North Oxfordshire in the 16th to 19th centuries?

Do we have information you are looking for?

Come and find out!

Sulgrave Manor has a collection of manuscripts, including land transfers, wills and other legal documents, from the middle of the 16th through to the 19th century relating to the estate which stretched far beyond Sulgrave. The originals are normally deposited with the Northamptonshire Record Office (though not accessible there) but they are back at 'home' for a brief period. The manuscripts have been transcribed and indexed by family and place name and it is this which makes it possible to invite local and family historians to come to see whether any of the information within the manuscripts is of relevance to their research. The list of family names covers not only the owners and tenants of Sulgrave land but also those involved in the outlying parts of the family estate including Radway, Wickham and so on.

You can take a look at the lists of the family names and places found in the manuscripts in order to see if any interest you.
You will then need to phone to book yourself into a session - there are a limited number of places. The charge will be £4.50 for a session.
During a three hour session (10am - 1pm or 1pm - 4pm) you will be able to view a selection of the manuscripts on display and use all the transcripts to find out if your people or places are there. You can then copy down the information or buy photocopies of any relevant transcripts at 5p a page.
Booking by phone on 01295 760205 or email to enquiries@sulgravemanor.org.uk is essential and closes on Saturday 10th November.

We have a list of all the names (Excel spreadsheet) mentioned in the Manor's archives. The numbers refer to the particular manuscript in which the name occurs; if the number is in brackets, the person only witnessed a document and no other information is available.

The manuscripts are numbered in date order and

Nos 1 - 24 are in the 1500s
Nos 25 - 93a are in the 1600s
Nos 94 - 155 are in the 1700s
Nos 156 - 218 are in the 1800s

We regret that we cannot answer queries on the manuscripts' contents by mail or phone.
