Exploration in the 16th Century

This programme is designed for KS1 and KS2. Experience the excitement of this great period of discovery when  men risked their lives and reputations to find new trade routes. What did it mean for those who never travelled beyond their village-in a time without newspapers, telephones, email, facebook, twitter...?

Visit the house of a sixteenth century business man, handle some artefacts, discuss the provisions for a sea journey, what life would be like aboard ship, build and load a ship and wave goodbye. KS1 and younger KS2 children will seek the 'treasures':

Sweet Corn   Chillis   Peppers   Potatoes   Tomatoes
Tobacco   Gold   Chocolate   Turkeys   but also Small Pox!

With the aid of riddles or maps, plot the paths but avoid frightening the native peoples. Try describing potatoes and tobacco to someone who has never heard of them!

Older KS2 children can create a chandler's list, discover how to measure 'full fathom five' and  learn early navigational skills with compass, log line and traverse board.

"All us Year 2's and the teachers thought it was excellent."

Please note: this programme is not available on Mondays.
