Sail with Columbus

Christopher Columbus.
Christopher Columbus.
This course is specially designed to complement one of the popular topics in Key Stage I curriculum and also to fulfil the needs of the infant aged children. Learning through play is very much the overall atmosphere of this day.

The children, divided into eight small groups, will be present when Captain Columbus comes up with his big idea. They will pretend to be Ferdinand and Isabella at the court of Spain and ship-builders on the docks. We will build a ship, and weather together the deprivations of naval life and the terrors of shipwreck. Some children will even become the indigenous population of the West Indies. A great deal of song and dance is used to tell the tale, as well as to break up the day.

In addition to the chronological story of the 1492 voyage, the children will also be shown through props and simple discussion within their small groups, what discoveries the Spanish made in the Americas, and moreover, how these have continued to affect Western Civilisation to this day.
